Introduction:
Due to demographic change and lack of health care personnel new solutions like preventive home visits (PHV) are necessary. PHV reduces the risk of long-term care and therefore, enables older people to live in their home as long as possible.
Aim of the study:
The aim of this study is to analyse the acceptance of PHV and the effect of PHV on health status of the older people.
Methods:
In this mixed method study PHV as a nursing intervention will be offered to people older than 65 years, not yet eligible for benefits from the long-term care insurance and living in Emlichheim, a region in the northwestern part of Lower Saxony. A sample of 75 people is determined. The health status will be recorded with the Short Form 12 questionnaire. Fifteen semi-structured interviews will be performed to investigate acceptance of the PHV intervention. Quantitative data will be analysed using inferential statistics, qualitative data will be analysed using content analysis. Ethical approval has been obtained.
Results:
It is expected that the findings of this study complete current knowledge about the concept of PHV.
Practical relevance:
This study is of high practical relevance, because additional insights of acceptance might enable the adaption of the PHV concept. Furthermore, increased knowledge and motivation for preventive behaviour of the older people is anticipated in order to extend their autonomy. The results of this study could contribute to the implementation of PHV in Germany, especially in rural areas. It tends to allow a self-determined life in their familiar environment for the older people, as the biggest need of this group.
The global climate system is currently warming due to the increase in CO2 emissions caused by humans. Technically oriented efficiency strategies are seen more frequently as solutions to reach the European Union’s maximum two degrees Celsius target. Companies play an important role in limiting climate change and must either prepare for such consequences or adopt new strategies such as the sufficiency strategy.
This article will discuss how the sufficiency strategy and the promotion of sufficient living in the context of the tourism industry can contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. Most common approaches toward sufficient living found in literature will be identified, analysed and discussed. Based on chosen keywords, the most common approaches were identified through a literature review of relevant journals from 1989 to 2014. Four main research fields that can promote sufficient living and reduce CO2 emissions were identified. Based on the prospects of the companies, it is apparent that sufficient strategies are not only able to support a market-orientated corporate management but also promote sufficient living and thus reduce CO2 emissions.
Detection and resolution of conflicting change operations in version management of process models

Version management of process models requires that different versions of process models are integrated by applying change operations. Conflict detection between individually applied change operations and conflict resolution support are integral parts of version management. For conflict detection it is utterly important to compute a precise set of conflicts, since the minimization of the number of detected conflicts also reduces the overhead for merging different process model versions. As not every syntactic conflict leads to a conflict when taking into account model semantics, a computation of conflicts solely on the syntax leads to an unnecessary high number of conflicts. Moreover, even the set of precisely computed conflicts can be extensive and their resolution means a significant workload for a user. As a consequence, adequate support is required that guides a user through the resolution process and suggests possible resolution strategies for individual conflicts. In this paper, we introduce the notion of syntactic and semantic conflicts for change operations of process models. We provide a method how to efficiently compute conflicts precisely, using a term formalization of process models and consider the subsequent resolution of the detected conflicts based on different strategies. Using this approach, we can significantly reduce the number of overall conflicts and reduce the amount of work for the user when resolving conflicts.
Talent scarcity in many parts of the world leads to the necessity to enlarge talent pools in order to provide enough future holders of key positions. Taking the scholarly discussion at the overlap of talent management and current careers literature as a starting point our qualitative empirical research provides insights in talent’s career decisions in an eastern emerging market, India, and a western developed country, Germany. 49 interviews with internationally experienced knowledge-workers were held to find out how to they come to career decisions throughout their career. Special focus was the balancing act of professional and private life sphere. An inductive-deductive approach was used to develop categories in MaxQda. Results show the impact of institutional frame, cultural context, and gender differences. Consequently, a stronger focus on talent’s different life phases with context specific deviations when configuring Talent Management in Multinational Enterprises can be advised.
In Germany, a lot of young children at risk of language difficulties still go undetected or are not assessed before preschool-age. For children where parents may suspect a disorder, this practice causes a lot of emotional distress alongside lost time for intervention. Thus, what contribution can parents and nursery staff make for the earlier detection of language difficulties? 34 children from four German kindergartens were tested with a standardized preschool screening for language problems by an SLT. Parents and nursery staff completed a questionnaire (FEE 3-4) that was designed to collect potential risk-factors and included the rating of children’s abilities across the main language domains. Outcomes from the FEE 3-4 were compared between parents and nursery staff as well as triangulated with results from the standardized screening. Agreement between parents and nursery staff re. individual children’s potential language difficulties was moderate (Kappa = 0.44, p = .050). Overall, nursery staff rated children’s language abilities more strictly and precisely than parents. Especially their rating of ‘word order’ (p = .022) and ‘verb endings’ contributed significantly to the identification of potential language difficulties similar to the standardized screening. The screening identified two children at risk without caregiver's concern, but not two others who were at risk of language disorder and for whom caregivers expressed concern. Caregiver’s awareness of early language difficulties appears to be rather intuitive. Young children at risk are most reliably detected if standardized instruments are used in combination with caregiver questionnaires. Ideally, this process includes data from parents and nursery staff to be interpreted by an experienced SLT, as the use of a standardized screening alone may lead to missed or mistaken identification where essential information about the child’s environment (e.g. risk factors) is not provided. If parents are concerned about children’s language, full assessment is clearly justified.
The increasing complexity of caseloads in SLT practice, e.g. due to higher comorbidity, lacking information or experience in the
treatment of complicated cases, calls for support from experienced as well as specialist practitioners from within the field - especially
for novice therapists. One way to tackle these challenges may be peer coaching and how it can be employed within the educational
and professional SLT setting.
Peer coaching was implemented across five semesters of a successive SLT study programme at a University of Applied Sciences in
Germany. The approach was embedded in a clinical reasoning seminar with 25 SLT students who each presented a challenging case
study from their current workload. All participants completed a short online survey to evaluate the feasibility of the team approach
within this setting as well as their personal benefit and development re. the discussed case studies.
Students felt encouraged by being able to share their experience and tackle actual challenges. They particularly valued receiving
answers from a broad range of other SLTs but also contributing to other students’ queries and providing practical solutions for
them. All participants felt that peer coaching was an appropriate approach for clinical reasoning to support their professional as well
as personal development. Other outcomes were a perceived increased ability to employ metacognitive reflection to be used with
their whole caseload but also a prospective need for further training. Some students suggested the employment of peer coaching
within their work setting.
In the educational as well as professional SLT setting, peer coaching can be successfully employed, triggering metacognitive
reflection re. practitioner’s thinking and acting, resulting in an increased awareness of needs and skills as part of the clinical
reasoning process.
As of the reporting year 2017, extended non-financial reporting requirements will apply to certain large companies within the EU on the basis of the EU-Directive 2014/95/EU. The aim is to provide an overview of selected regulations for the new non-financial statements. This includes the analysis of the German Sustainability Code as well as the German Accounting Standard No. 20. The analysis shows a tightening of disclosure on non-financial reporting and an increased focus of disclosures on non-financial concepts, objectives and measures. Hence, the risk management of a preparer gains in importance with regard to non-financial aspects of the business activity.
Biogas plants produce nutrient rich digestates as side products, which are usually used as local fertilisers. Yet the large amount and regional gradients of biogas plants in Germany necessitate management, conditioning, and transportation of digestates, in order to follow good fertilising procedure and prohibit local over-fertilisation. With a membrane-based treatment chain, i.e. centrifugation, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis, digestates can be separated into a solid N,P-fertiliser, a liquid N,K-fertiliser, and dischargeable water. Up to now, the high energy demand of the process chain, in particular the ultrafiltration step, limits the economical market launch of the treatment chain. A reduction of the energy demand is challenging, as digestates exhibit a high fouling potential and ultrafiltration fluxes differ considerably for digestates from different biogas plants. In a systematic screening of 28 digestate samples from agricultural biogas plants and 6 samples from bio-waste biogas plants, ultrafiltration performance could be successfully linked to the rheological properties of the digestate’s liquid phase and to its macromolecular biopolymer concentration. By modification of the fluid characteristics through enzymatic treatment, ultrafiltration performance was considerably increased by factor 2.8 on average, which equals energy savings in the ultrafiltration step of approximately 45%. Consequently, the energy demand of the total treatment chain decreases, which offers potential for further rollout of the membrane-based digestate treatment.
The present study gives an overview of recent investigations dealing with the fatigue behaviour of the tempered martensitic steel 50CrMo4 (Fe-0.5wt%C-1wt%Cr) in the HCF and VHCF regime by taking into account a variation in material strength, by modifying the heat treatment parameters. The parameters for the tempering treatment were adapted to receive two material conditions with 37HRC and 57HRC, respectively. Subsequently, fatigue specimens were machined from the heat-treated bars for fatigue tests in an ultrasonic (f=20000Hz) and a resonance (f=95Hz) fatigue testing machine under fully reversed loading (R=-1) at laboratory air atmosphere. It was found that the dominant fatigue and fracture mechanisms change with increasing material strength. For 37HRC moderate-strength specimens crack initiation was shown to occur on the specimen surface within Cr depleted bands (segregation bands) as the dominant fatigue damage mechanism. Contrary to that, only internal crack initiation at non-metallic inclusions was observed for the high strength 57HRC condition. Furthermore, the completely different crack initiation mechanisms of the two heat treatment conditions were assessed by applying the Murakami approach relating the fatigue limit with the size of non-metallic inclusions.
he development of context-aware applications is a difficult and error-prone task. The dynamics of the environmental context combined with the complexity of the applications poses a vast number of possibilities for mistakes during the creation of new applications. Therefore it is important to test applications before they are deployed in a life system. For this reason, this paper proposes a testing tool, which will allow for automatic generation of various test cases from application description documents. Semantic annotations are used to create specific test data for context-aware applications. A test case reduction methodology based on test case diversity investigations ensures scalability of the proposed automated testing approach.
Smart city applications in the Big Data era require not only techniques dedicated to dynamicity handling, but also the ability to take into account contextual information, user preferences and requirements, and real-time events to provide optimal solutions and automatic configuration for the end user. In this paper, we present a specific functionality in the design and implementation of a declarative decision support component that exploits contextual information, user preferences and requirements to automatically provide optimal configurations of smart city applications. The key property of user-centricity of our approach is achieved by enabling users to declaratively specify constraints and preferences on the solutions provided by the smart city application through the Decision Support component, and automatically map these constraints and preferences to provide optimal responses targeting user needs. We showcase the effectiveness and flexibility of our solution in two real usecase scenarios: a multimodal travel planner and a mobile parking application. All the components and algorithms described in this paper have been defined and implemented as part of the Smart City Framework CityPulse.
Reliable information processing is an indispensable task in Smart City environments. Heterogeneous sensor infrastructures of individual information providers and data portal vendors tend to offer a hardly revisable information quality. This paper proposes a correlation model-based monitoring approach to evaluate the plausibility of smart city data sources. The model is based on spatial, temporal, and domain dependent correlations between individual data sources. A set of freely available datasets is used to evaluate the monitoring component and show the challenges of different spatial and temporal resolutions.
Interpolation of data in smart city architectures is an eminent task for the provision of reliable services. Furthermore, it is a key functionality for information validation between spatiotemporally related sensors. Nevertheless, many existing projects use a simplified geospatial model that does not take the infrastructure, which affects events and effects in the real world, into account. There are various available algorithms for interpolation and the calculation of routes on infrastructure based graphs and distances on geospatial data. This work proposes a combined approach by interconnecting detailed geospatial data whilst regarding the underlying infrastructure model.
Pregnancy loss is the most common complication in pregnancy. Yet those who experience it can find it challenging to disclose this loss and feelings associated
with it, and to seek support for psychological and physical recovery. We describe our process for
interleaving interviews, theoretical development, speculative design, and prototyping Not Alone to
explore the design space for online disclosures and
support seeking in the pregnancy loss context.
Interviews with 27 women who had experienced pregnancy loss resulted in theoretical concepts such as
“network-level reciprocal disclosure” (NLRD). We discuss how interview findings informed the design of
the Not Alone prototype, a mobile application aimed at enabling disclosure and social support exchange among those with pregnancy loss experience. The Not Alone prototype embodies concepts that facilitate NLRD: perceptions of homophily, anonymity levels, and selfdisclosure by talking about one’s experience and engaging with others’ disclosures. In future work, we will use Not Alone as a technology probe for exploring
NLRD as a design principle.
Protection and privacy of data in cooperative agricultural processes : the challenges of the future

In agriculture, the growing usage of sensors, smart mobile machinery and information systems results in high volumes of data. The data differs in accuracy, frequency, volume, type and, most importantly, owner of the information. However, cooperative processes and big data analyses require access to comprehensive amounts of data for successful agricultural operation and reasoning. In some processes instructed contractors even gather data belonging to other owners and use it for machinery operation optimisation and accounting (e.g. yield in maize harvest). Today’s approach of data handling has a high potential to conflict with European and national regulations for data protection and privacy. This article presents a concept for continuous data protection and privacy in cooperative agricultural processes. The concept aims at ensuring data sovereignty for the owner while making as much data usable for process operation and big data research at the same time. Briefly explained, owners pick a collection of data and create usage licenses for other players. The licenses specify time-limited and / or position-bound access to the data collection. Privacy environments in soft- and / or hardware protect access rights on end user devices, data share hubs and machinery devices such as agricultural terminals. In addition to access right configurations, digital signatures prevent data manipulation when cooperative players capture data during processes. Socalled signature boxes represent certificated soft- or hardware components, which are located close at data sources (e.g. as hardware attached to sensors on mobile machinery) and bind the data captured with digital signatures.
For Delay-Tolerant Networks (DTNs) many routing algorithms have been suggested. However, their performance depends heavily on the applied scenario. Especially heterogeneous scenarios featuring known and unknown node movements as well as different kinds of data lead to either poor delivery ratios or exhausted network resources.
To overcome these problems this paper introduces Data-Driven Routing for DTNs. Data is categorized according to its requirements into priority queues. Each queue applies an appropriate DTN routing algorithm that fits the data requirements best. Simulation results show that Data-Driven Routing allows high delivery ratios for time-critical data while saving network resources during the transfer of less time-critical data at the same time.
Management of agricultural processes is often troubled by disconnections and data transfer failures. Limited cellular network coverage may prevent information exchange between mobile process participants.
The research projects KOMOBAR and ISOCom designed, implemented und field-tested a delay tolerant platform for robust communication in rural areas and challenging environments. An adaptable combination of infrastructure-based cellular networks and infrastructure-free multihop ad hoc communication (WLAN) leads to a variety of new communication opportunities. Temporal storage and forwarding of data on mobile farm machinery as well as dynamic platform configurations during process runtime strongly enhance reliability and robustness of data transfers.
High Performance and Privacy for Distributed Energy Management: Introducing PrivADE+ and PPPM

Distributed Energy Management (DEM) will play a vital role in future smart grids. An important and often
overlooked factor in this concept is privacy. This paper presents two privacy-preserving DEM algorithms
called PrivADE+ and PPPM. PrivADE+ uses a round-based energy management procedure for switchable and
dynamically adaptable loads. PPPM utilises on the market-based PowerMatcher approach. Both algorithms
apply homomorphic encryption to privately gather aggregated data and exchange commands. Simulations
show that PrivADE+ and PPPM achieve good energy management quality with low communication requirements
and without negative influences on robustness.
Teachers in health informatics have a broad variety of international and national educational recommendations to rely on when designing programmes, curricula, courses and educational material. However, in addition they often need very specific information for their setting, blue-prints, hands-on experience and encouragement to try something new. This workshop presents three case studies from European universities who have implemented inter-professional, technology enabled health informatics courses in undergraduate, postgraduate and open university settings. These approaches will be put into the context of the TIGER recommendation framework that includes priority ratings of health informatics competencies and case studies to illustrate them. The workshop attendees will have ample opportunity to exchange ideas with the presenters and start a mutual learning process for health informatics teachers.
Business-driven development favors the construction of process models
at different abstraction levels and by different people. As a consequence, there is a demand for consolidating different versions of process models by merging them. In this paper, we study a basic scenario, derive requirements and present a prototype for detecting and resolving changes between process models.
Adaptivity is prevalent in today’s software. Mobile devices
self-adapt to available network connections, washing machines
adapt to the amount of laundry, etc. Current approaches for engineering such systems facilitate the specification of adaptivity in the analysis and the technical design. However, the modeling of platform independent models for adaptivity in the logical design phase remains rather neglected causing a gap between the analysis and the technical design phase.
To overcome this situation, we propose an approach called Adapt Cases. Adapt Cases allow the explicit modeling of adaptivity with domain-specific means, enabling adaptivity to gather attention early in the software engineering process.
Since our approach is based on the concept of use cases it
is easy adoptable in new and even running projects that
use the UML as a specification language, and additionally,
can be easily incorporated into model-based development
environments.
Background: IT is getting an increasing importance in hospitals. In this
context, major IT decisions are often made by CEOs who are not necessarily IT
experts. Objectives: Therefore, this study aimed at a) exploring different types of IT
decision makers at CEO level, b) identifying hypotheses if trust exists between these
different types of CEOs and their CIOs and c) building hypotheses on potential
consequences regarding risk taking and innovation. Methods: To this end, 14
qualitative interviews with German hospital CEOs were conducted to explore the
research questions. Results: The study revealed three major types: IT savvy CEOs,
IT enthusiastic CEOs and IT indifferent CEOs. Depending on these types, their
relationship with the CIO varied in terms of trust and common language. In case of
IT indifferent CEOs, a potential vicious circle of lack of IT knowledge, missing trust,
low willingness to take risks and low innovation power could be identified.
Conclusion: In order to break of this circle, CEOs seem to need more IT knowledge
and / or greater trust in their CIO.
Companies and R&D institutions increasingly collaborate not only in isolated projects but also in knowledge-based networks. In those networks, participants combine expertise and applied problems to generate both ‘problem-solving knowledge’ and specialized knowledge: during the process of common problem-solving each partner acquires some of the specialized knowledge of the other partners as well as the newly generated problem-solving knowledge. This article examines the basic principles involved and provides a simple mathematical description of the step-by-step accumulation of knowledge through the solving of applied problems in a knowledge-based network. The rate of increase of the total amount of available knowledge in the network is derived and implications for the orientation of R&D institutes and companies are set out.
Building on Hofstede's finding that individualism and social hierarchy are incompatible at the societal level, the authors examined the relationship between individualism-collectivism and orientations toward authority at the individual level. In Study 1, authoritarianism was related to three measures of collectivism but unrelated to three measures of individualism in a U.S. sample (N = 382). Study 2 used Triandis's horizontal-vertical individualism-collectivism framework in samples from Bulgaria, Japan, New Zealand, Germany, Poland, Canada, and the United States (total N = 1,018). Both at the individual level and the societal level of analysis, authoritarianism was correlated with vertical individualism and vertical collectivism but unrelated to horizontal collectivism. Horizontal individualism was unrelated to authoritarianism except in post-Communist societies whose recent history presumably made salient the incompatibility between state authority and self-determination.
The demographic shift in the age structure has the effects that many ageing employees work in organisations. Migration can slow down the ageing of population but could not stop it. More and more people with immigration background work in organisations. Therefore, the question is, whether diversity sensitive attitudes count for all diversity aspects. The central aim of the study is to deal with the problem fields of multicultural teamwork. Thereby, the focus is on the collaboration of employees with and without immigration background. The interviews with employees with and without an immigra-tion background of various company branches were conducted. The results show that employees with an immigration background have more contact and feel comfortable with persons from different cultures than employees without an immigration back-ground. The qualitative analysis indicates that there is a high need of competence devel-opment, especially intercultural and social competences in organisations. The results of the study reveal that personality traits and characteristics of employees play a role to what extent they accept diversity and are willing to work with persons from another culture. Age is not important regarding intercultural competence development.
Our world and our lives are changing in many ways. Communication, networking, and computing technologies are among the most influential enablers that shape our lives today. Digital data and connected worlds of physical objects, people, and devices are rapidly changing the way we work, travel, socialize, and interact with our surroundings, and they have a profound impact on different domains,such as healthcare, environmental monitoring, urban systems, and control and management applications, among several other areas. Cities currently face an increasing demand for providing services that can have an impact on people’s everyday lives. The CityPulse framework supports smart city service creation by means of a distributed system for semantic discovery, data analytics, and interpretation of large-scale (near-)real-time Internet of Things data and social media data streams. To goal is to break away from silo
applications and enable cross-domain data integration. The CityPulse framework integrates multimodal, mixed quality, uncertain and incomplete data to create reliable, dependable information and continuously adapts data processing techniques to meet the quality of information requirements from end users. Different than existing solutions that mainly offer unified views of the data, the CityPulse framework is also equipped with powerful data analytics modules that perform intelligent data aggregation, event detection, quality
assessment, contextual filtering, and decision support. This paper presents the framework, describes ist components, and demonstrates how they interact to support easy development of custom-made applications for citizens. The benefits and the effectiveness of the framework are demonstrated in a use-case scenario
implementation presented in this paper.
Purpose
Attracting skilled students is an important aim of many cities in a knowledge-based society. This paper focuses on urban factors of attractiveness from a student's perspective and analyses their influence on locational choices of students. The criteria found were also used to evaluate how the City of Osnabrück, Germany, is rated in terms of these criteria and to reveal the greatest discrepancies.
Design / Methodology / Approach
The paper is based on a multi-level empirical research concept, including qualitative and quantitative approaches. A survey of 2,300 students was conducted in Osnabrück on the basis of focus group discussions with students and interviews with various experts such as a neighbourhood manager, an urban planner, a district mayor, a college president, a real estate manager.
Originality/value
To date, little research has been undertaken to empirically examine the specific requirements that German students look for in a place to live and study. According to the author’s present state of knowledge (January 2018), a comparable study has not been done.
The main contribution of this paper is the empirical analysis of what makes cities attractive to students. In contrast to the findings of Richard Florida about the Creative Class, the cleanliness of a city, beautiful city scenery, and attractive apartments are more important to students than cultural offers, interesting job opportunities, or a multicultural population.
Practical Implications
Insights from the empirical survey can both help to analyse important factors in students' decision-making process and provide possible measures that the city stakeholders can take.

Still Searching or Have You Found It Already? – Usability and Web Design of an Educational Website

Background: Apart from a straight-forward and intuitive operability an appealing design determines the success of a website equally well. For this reason, the selection of images and navigation bars plays a determining role. The eye tracking method proved to be appropriate in order to verify the usability of websites. Objectives: The aim of the study was to improve the usability of the website of an educational institute for trainees as target group. Methods/Approach: For this purpose, the use of an eye-tracking technology was combined with a survey. The eye-tracking study was implemented task-oriented. Test persons were asked to search for particular courses within this institute. Results: This approach in combination with a subsequent questionnaire resulted in tangible indications of search patterns of the test group. Furthermore, their perception and their appraisal of the usability as well as the web design was analysed. Even though most tasks were accomplished effectively and efficiently with a positive user feedback, a potential for improvement was detected, in particular with regard to the images and the location of the search field. Conclusions: The selected choice of methods enables researchers and web designers to derive recommendations for the orientation, structure, optimisation and comprehensibility of a website.

Every culture has its paradise vision: desirable and external conditions which, inside the concerned culture, are infrequently observed or difficult to realize and are linked to one another. This cross-cultural study compares well-being inChina,Bulgaria,FranceandGermany. The cultural patterns of the culture are differently, but well-being is easier to achieve if people adapt to their cultural patterns. The adjustment (positive subjective culture) is formed by culture-specific content and needs different in regards to different cultures.

This study applies to the perception of fairness during teamwork. Students were assigned to work groups by lot and were instructed to prepare a course presentation. Groups were given no guidelines relating to allocation of tasks, but each group was graded as a whole. Since a real grade was given in a non-simulated experiment, it was possible to determine team efficiency, work satisfaction, and perception of fairness via a subsequent study. Results show a strong influence of fairness on team efficiency.
The following article deals with equivalence as a specific quality criterion concerning cross cultural research in psychology and provides an overview for this topic. The comparability of constructs as well as of data is analyzed. For this, the different levels of equivalence are regarded, e.g., translation equivalence and others. Classical as well as modern methods for the testing and guarantee of equivalence are analyzed. Critical approaches and methodical problems of cross cultural research are described.
The study at hand focuses the interdependencies between stress incidents and strategies of stress-coping in relation with well-being in helping professions. Furthermore, the scarce areas and the proband’s strategies of health behavior, comparing helping and other vocational groups, are investigated. The sample consist of teachers, bank employees, employees of marketing agencies, employees coming from the machine construction industry, as well as nurses, psychotherapists and physicians. The results show that everyday annoyances and problem-oriented stress-coping indeed affect well-being.
Data warehouse systems have become a basic technological infrastructure in management decision making. Nevertheless, the overall utility of data warehouses remains unmeasured in most practical cases. As a consequence of this, IT-managers do not possess appropriate means to evaluate warehouse benefits in order to decide about investments in warehousing technology. This paper develops a controlling instrument for data warehouse systems based on the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) approach. On the basis of the technological aspects of data warehouse systems, the BSC perspectives are developed and populated with relevant objectives and measures for datawarehouse success. These perspectives are integrated into a consistent data warehouse scorecard. Finally, this instrument provides a holistic approach to drive the performance of data warehouse systems.
Every modern institution involved in higher education needs a Learning Management System (LMS) to handle learning and teaching processes. It is necessary to offer e.g. electronic lecture materials to the students for download via the internet. In some educational contexts, it is also necessary to offer internet tutorials to be able to give the students more personal support and accompany them through the whole lecture period. Many organisations have introduced commercial LMS and gained the experience that monolithic solutions do not fulfil the dynamic requirements of complex educational institutions and are very cost-intensive. Therefore, many universities face the decision to stick to their commercial LMS or to switch to a potentially more cost-effective and flexible solution, for instance by adopting available Open Source LMS. Since we have made profound experience in developing and operating an Open Source LMS, this contribution enlightens the main characteristics of this alternative. This paper describes a use case dealing with a full product lifecycle (development, deployment, use and evaluation) of an Open Source LMS at the University of Muenster (Germany). It identifies relevant instruments and aspects of system design which software architects in practical application domains should pay attention to.
