Implementation and Analysis of Two Knowledge Base Approaches for the Treatment of Chronic Wounds
(2020)
The access to data in healthcare is an enabler for the implementation of clinical decision support systems (CDSS) in practice. The usage of CDSS aims to be of efficient assistance to healthcare providers. The aim of the BMBF project “PosiThera”, is to support the involved professions in the treatment process of chronic wounds. In this study we implemented the formalized knowledge of chronic wound diagnosis into two different knowledge base approaches, the HL7 Arden Syntax and a Petri net approach. The motivating factor behind our study was to use both approaches for the implementation of the projects knowledge base and to compare the results. We implemented the formalized knowledge successfully in both approaches. The results of our comparison showed similarities and differences of the Arden Syntax and the Petri net approach, which might support the evolution of both approaches in the future.
This chapter provides examples of digital capability preparation for nurses across Europe, Australia and New Zealand through the inclusion of informatics in the nursing curriculum. Nurses have a unique role in health care, they are the health profession most in contact with the patient and as such collect, store and use patient data as a core function of their role. In the twenty-first century it is impossible to work without technology and thus nursing informatics is not a ‘speciality’, but rather a feature of being a health professional in the modern age, however it must be recognized that there is a difference between being digitally capable and being credible in terms of informatics. The three exemplars in this chapter provide responses to the challenges posed through acknowledging the differences between digital capability and informatics credibility.

Since 2017, the German Society for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology e.V. (GMDS) offers the submission of full papers to the annual meetings, optional in Studies in Health Technologies and Informatics (Stud HIT) or in GMS Medical Informatics, Biometrics, and Epidemiology (MIBE). GMDS’ aim is to increase the attractiveness of the conference and paper submission process in particular for young scientists and to increase the visibility of the conference. A standardized peer review process was established. Since 2017, a 25–35% of the contributions have been submitted as full papers. A total of 177 papers were published in Stud HTI. With an unofficial journal impact factor of 1.088 (2019) and 0.540 (2020), the papers were cited with a frequency similarly to national medical journals or full paper contributions of International medical informatics conferences.
