Pain Neuroscience Education - An important part of a modern and evidence-based management in performing artists' health (Abstract)

  • Rationale Performing artists are often confronted with long-term pain, which can have a variety of effects such as posture restrictions, limited performance or, in extreme cases, the end of their career. Comprehensive therapy management is therefore very important to prevent or at least reduce these limitations. In modern pain science, Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) is becoming increasingly important. Numerous research studies show that patients who receive neurophysiological training about the origins and effects of pain have better outcomes than patients without this type of training. Purpose The purpose of this presentation is to present the current status on the topic of PNE and to transfer this to the performing artists. Different approaches will be shown as to what such an education could look like. Methods Various pain models are presented and classified into the current state of pain research. It will then be shown that PNE is evidence based and positive effects have been proven by numerous studies. It also presents what a PNE could look like in a specific patient application. Results PNE is an important therapeutic part in the management of performing artists with pain and should always be considered. PNE is simple to use and easily for patients to understand. Conclusions Even if the physiology of pain is a complex process, a therapist can explain to the patient in simple words how and why their pain arises and thereby make an important contribution to patient management. This gives patients the opportunity to better classify and understand their pain and thus enable them to develop better management in stressful situations. Educational Objectives At the end of the presentation, the participants will be able to… 1. describe different pain models 2. know the principles of PNE 3. can perform PNE
