Resilient BPMN over Wireless
- The Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) enables the definition of collaborative workflows by structuring the activities of different participants. Apart from use cases in finance and commerce, BPMN gains popularity in application domains such as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), the Internet of Things (IoT), Ubiquitous Computing, and scenarios taking place in rural or disaster-affected regions. Many of these domains are exposed to delayed, intermittent, or broken wireless connectivity. This paper demonstrates the realization of resilient business processes using resilient BPMN (rBPMN). Delayed, intermittent, or broken wireless connectivity is addressed by adding and implementing new process modeling elements. Alternatives for possibly failing message flows are dynamically determined. Functionality offered by remote participants may be moved to other participants for local execution. A graph-based analysis verifies resilient operation at design- and runtime.
